Pilgrim Hill

Skyscrapers framed by rugged landscapes are striking juxtapositions, not unlike human contradictions. City landscapes taking over our natural settings becoming the new vision of nature. It is the push and the pull between organic and man-made. Setting up to paint on an Indian Fall day in 2020 the great city appeared rising from the rugged rocks. Amidst a pandemic, populations of people fled the CIty and the state of the City went into question. The Natural backdrop, however, is a reminder of the cycle of things, and just as nature calls a death and rebirth, too shall the city cycle through dark days to its former splendor; The given name of the spot in Central Park, Pilgram Hill, suggests a narrative of a great city rising from a humble beginning.

Thick impasto paint from golden leaves around the Loeb Boathouse of Central Park. While in normal years, the Victorian-inspired terrace set back from the Ramble is crowded with visitors, in 2020, the boats on the water's edge remained docked, and the rustic boathouse stood still.

The inviting red and white striped awning over the entrance to the Big City of New York's rustic structure gives a small neighborhood friendliness amidst the grand scale city. It is the perfect stop when heading from East to West to grasp a cup of hot cocoa on a chilly day.

The unusual quiet appeared eerie the morning I set up my paints in the middle of Broadway and 54th street. As the day passed along, the streets eventually reclaimed the buzz but with Broadway closed this year; it was missing all the tourists. Painting on New York streets is a very physical activity as all my supplies need to be carried for blocks on my back.

My dog Ca$h accompanied me on my painting field trips around the city. he sat so patiently I had to paint him into one. Ca$h was a better muse than I could have hoped.
